Integrated Transportation System FAQ

Here you will find clear and simple answers to the most common questions about the integrated transport system. We want your experience traveling through Santo Domingo and Santiago to be easy, comfortable and hassle-free.

The public transport system has grown over the last few years, however, it has not won the battle for the use of private vehicles, increasing the vehicle fleet, increasing congestion levels and traffic in each of our streets.

This is why the Government of the Dominican Republic has proposed to make the greatest investment in the history of the nation in the design, construction and management of an integrated, public and massive transport system: the integrated transport system of Santo Domingo

These indicators reflect the level of saturation and congestion that mobility presents in the city:

  • Mobile population (71%) 3,527,000 users
  • Of this population, only 436,000 travel by Metro, Cable Car and Omsa
  • Average travel time: 1 hour and 30 minutes
  • Average travel cost: ranges from RD$55.00 to RD$100.00

The demand for travel by type of transport:

  • Private vehicle: 42%
  • Public transport: 36%, which are distributed in:
    • Subway and cable car: 9%
    • Buses: 13%
    • Taxis: 2%
    • Motoconcho: 3%
  • On foot: 21%
  • Others: 1%

60% to 70% of the demand for travel is internal within each municipality that makes up the province, leaving 30% to 40% demand for urban transport, consolidating on February 27, Ave. J.F. Kennedy and Ave. Independencia.

With a share of about 16 thousand concho cars, 3 thousand minibuses/microbuses and 560 buses.

The Santo Domingo Monorail is established as the structuring axis of the Metropolitan Area, crossing the Las Américas Highway and Av. 27 de Febrero, generating a public transport offer of high capacity and availability, with an automatic operation system, which will allow the travel demand planned by the connection of Santo Domingo Este and the National District.

The monorail option was selected for the savings represented by the high construction, instead of the mining tunnel that the other railway systems required, saving approximately 35% of the cost. Likewise, the project represents an increase in the acquisition of trips to serve the sectors of Los Fraile, Ensanche Isabelita, Los Mameyes, Los Tres Ojos, Ensanche Ozama, Alma Rosa, Maquiteria, Villa Duarte, Villa Francisca, San Lazaro, San Carlos, Colonial City, Villa Consuelo, Don Bosco, Miraflores, Villa Juana, and the Metropolitan Center of Santo Domingo, with the sectors of Naco, Esperilla, El Vergel and Evaristo Morales.

The first phase of construction of the project, the prioritized section of Phase 1 will start at the Olympic Center to the Juan Carlos Bridge in Santo Domingo Este.  This section will have 12 stations:

  1. Juan Carlos Bridge
  2. Isabelite Enlargement
  3. The three eyes
  4. Saint Vincent of Paul
  5. Dario Contreras
  6. View of the lighthouse
  7. Villa Duarte
  8. Enriquillo Park
  9. National Palace
  10. Villa Consuelo
  11. Miraflores
  12. Olympic Center

The system will have a maximum speed of 80 km/hr with a train every 90 seconds.
